Antique Birks Sterling Sugar Caster Shaker or Muffineer

I love a good find and here is a perfect piece that I spotted recently. It was the intricate design that caught my eye and the engraving on the middle. I thought it was something similar to a Thurible which is a metal incense burner suspended from chains which is used during worship services.

When I picked it up, it had good weight and then I saw the stamp on the bottom indicating Birks and Sterling along with the hallmarks. It looked as thought someone had scratched their initials on it as well. I was unsure what it was used for but it was unique and well worth adding to one of my #randomthingsicollect.

So this is an antique Sterling Silver sugar caster, also known as a sugar shaker or muffineer, often featuring intricate engraving with foliate motifs with a pierced cover for sprinkling sugar. Some examples date back to the Georgian or Victorian eras.

Here is a picture with only the top was cleaned. I figured I'd better take some photos b4 I got it all cleaned up as I love to polish.

Thanks to wonderful Pinterest, I came across this wonderful photo editing site which has been recently been picked up by Google @ picMonkey.com Here are some of the cool effects that can be done:

Pictures of Montreal in the 60's

Decarie Boulevard 1961. The  Gibeau Orange Julep , also known as the Big Orange, was built by Hermas Gibeau in 1942. That building looked like  this  in the 1950s. The structure was rebuilt in the mid-1960s when the road was widened. This larger, fiberglass orange is 40 feet in diameter. The Orange Julep drink is similar to that produced by Orange Julius. Both companies developed their foamy orange drinks in the 1920s.
