Back from vacation and missing the internet and all my inspiring artists

One great thing about being on vacation at our cottage is that there is no internet because otherwise I would be on it and not taking it easy. This is when hubby and I get a chance to do some art work in between all the work that is needed for a second home. So as soon as I unpack when I am home, the first thing that I do is load up my computer and get caught up on all my favourite inspiring artists out there. This one in particular is one of my favourite encaustic artists, Eric Gaston Simard. Check out some of his amazing pieces they are so colourful and here is some of the details of his proces with encaustic. I am so doing this with a couple of frames that I have where the glass broke, of course after I finish the paintings that I am working on. http://www.ericgastonsimard.com/#!gallery/c22j5

Latest encaustic painting

Well it's summer time again and that is about the only time I play with encaustic because I worry about doing it without proper ventilation or a mask in the house. So I wait until it's nice outside and play around. I am all out of wood to play with and I have tons of canvases that I recently bought on special so I figured I would give it a try. I am not sure how well it will hold up over time with the weight of the wax but I'll come back at   later date and make notes. The letter B was collaged and after fusing some wax and buffing I added some detail which I later filled in with some metallic paints. This was done on birch board, 8 x 10 $75.00 Work still in progress on canvas. I added some collage elements and different colour waxes and then used some metallic ink for some details.

About Encaustic

ENCAUSTIC PAINTINGS, WAX WORK- Source  http://www.francescaazzara.com/links.php?16073#.T-Sf2xf2YsI        A medium that pre dates oil painting.  Encaustic paint is a mixture of beeswax and pigment.  This challenging yet forgiving medium allows the artist to layer, collage, scrape away and etch into the surface.  The rich textures and depth of imagery cannot be duplicated with any other medium.     Encaustic painting is done with pigmented beeswax tempered with damar resin (hardened tree sap) that is kept molten while painting.  The paint is usually applied on to a ridgid, absorbant surface such as plywood or untempered masonite. Each layer of wax must be fused with a heat gun.  The difficulty and beauty of this medium comes from its instantaneous drying time.    The encaustic surface is characterized by luminous color, lush surfaces and translucent layers of color.  Highly durable and impervious to mo...

Encaustic Tips from Kathleen Waterloo

Encaustic Care Tips by Kathleen Waterloo 1.  Buff with soft cotton cloth  gently  to clean, remove grime or fingerprints, or to return to gloss finish. Ideal cloths are soft t-shirts or silky pantyhose. Avoid flannel, rough cloths or ones with many loose fibers. They will scratch or leave tiny fibers imbedded in the survace. 2.  Keep out of direct sun  or heat source. Heat may make the surface feel 'tacky' but will not alter appearance. Remove from source of heat and surface will cool back to normal. Encaustic will melt at 162 degrees F. 3  Do not use cleaning solvents  or water to clean the surface. 4.  Was is a natural material  and efflorescence does occur as the result of water oxidation. (This also occurs in brick and in egg tempera paintings.) Over time - possibly as soon as a month - a matte finish will appear on the painting surface. Both gloss and matte finishes are acceptable and each have different appearances. To return to a ...

Paintings in progress

I am working on 2 different paintings, 1 acrylic and the other encaustic. The acrylic one has collaged pictures and tissue paper for texture and then built up with some acrylic mediums. I am calling it "the field of dreams". I am not sure where I am going with the butterfly and don't really like the puff paint around it but will play around with it a bit more. I also included some micro beads and some sparkle paint which I may tone down a bit before the final varnish, although it will still show through after the final coat. The encaustic one name "fire and water" which my son started with me last year is still in progress too. I also added some micro beads but will probably have to add another coat of was for it to become completely in beaded in the wax so that I can get the glossy finish when the wax is buffed.                                             Here is the ...

Galerie Rye - Manuela Jarry Encaustic Painting Workshop

I saw this ad on Craigslist .com about a workshop for doing Encaustic painting and thought how wonderful. The only other workshops that I had heard about were in Ontario. It was held at Gallerie Rye, 1331A Ste-Catherine Est, Montréal . The cost was very reasonable, $75.00 with all the materials included from 1pm to 5pm. I really enjoyed myself and all the participants were very nice. I came home after the workshop and had a million ideas in my head of what my next project would be. Here is a photo of the piece that I worked on at the workshop. It's not amazing but I learnt some of the different techniques shown that afternoon. I am hoping that they are planning on doing another workshop soon. It was definitely worth the money. Worked a little more with my first piece that I posted back this summer and you can see how the melting of the wax has changed it. http://kamaclasses.blogspot.com/p/about-manuela-jarry.html http://kamaclasses.blogspot.com/p/testimonials.html

Encaustic Painting 101

I came across encaustic painting which is working with beeswax and mediums through my travels on youtube. I went out and bought some of the products which are a little costly. I spent hours and hours reading and watching videos on other artists and how they are using the medium. Finally I decided to jump in with hesitation I must say to prepare my medium. I was really nervous, # 1 because it can be quite toxic and # 2because it's hot.....I have a tendency to be a little clumsy with hot things. So I spent the afternoon working on the following painting. It didn't come out that great in the picture but I will try to see if I can get my neighbor Nathalie to take a shot with her amazing camera......she is a wonderful artist. The painting needs more layers of wax which I will do at a later date when I can work outside because it is just way too hot to work outdoors. This painting has really evolved into something completely different with the help on my son, Joey. We played aro...
